Norcross was officially incorporated on Oct. 26, 1870, with Cousin John serving as its first mayor. He also donated a square acre for a public park, stipulating that it remain one forever and never be used for industrial purposes. That land later became Thrasher Park!

Back-to-School Hygiene Drive

Historic Norcross Tour of Homes
See what’s behind the doors of more than 20 historic Norcross homes and landmarks, many rarely open to the public! The Georgia Trust’s self-guided Norcross Expedition, which takes place Saturday, August 15, 10:30am-5pm, highlights the city’s railroad history and architecture, from Victorian-era residences to early 20th-century bungalows. Norcross ACE
Norcross residents and business owners can get a behind-the-scenes look at city government through Norcross ACE, a new seven-week citizen academy. The free program includes facility tours, hands-on discussions and introductions to the departments and people serving the city. Kick It in the Nnett Watch Party
Explore Gwinnett and the City of Norcross are bringing the excitement of the FIFA World Cup Semifinals to Lillian Webb Park on Wednesday, July 15 with the free Kick It in the Nnett Watch Party! City Council Election
Are you interested in joining City Council? Norcross will hold a special election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, to fill the City Council seat formerly held by Council Member Marshall Cheek. Residents interested in running may qualify beginning Monday, September 14 at 8:30am through Wednesday, September 16 at 4:30pm. Candidates will need to complete a qualifying packet and submit the required $360 qualifying fee during that period.

Summer is halfway over, which means it’s time to start thinking about fall kids’ activities! Registration is now open for Fall 2026 youth recreation softball with Norcross Youth Softball, part of the Norcross Youth Baseball & Softball Association. The program is open to girls ages 3 and up and offers a fun, supportive place to build confidence, make new friendships and learn softball! Jazz in the Alley is back for the summer! This year the music is moving from Betty Mauldin Park to Thrasher Park! Saxophonist Antoine Gibson will perform on Saturday, June 27, from 7:30-9:30pm. The event is free to attend! Lawn chairs and picnic baskets are welcome, with limited chairs and tables available. Guests can also enjoy food from local restaurants and food trucks!

“Greetings” Coloring Placemat
Norcross’ iconic “Greetings” mural is now part of a free coloring placemat with expanded storytelling for kids (and creative, doodley adults)! Visit an HNBA member dine-in restaurant in Historic Downtown Norcross to pick one up with a mini-pack of Crayola crayons. This project was created by the Norcross Public Arts Commission with support from the city and a Gwinnett Creativity Fund 2026 Project Grant.

Expedition Tour of Homes
The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation is bringing its Expedition Tour to Norcross on Saturday, August 15, from 10am-5pm! This self-guided tour invites guests to explore historic private homes, churches, venues, preservation projects and other sites connected to Norcross’ history. Volunteers are needed to serve as house docents during the tour! Docents will help welcome guests and share basic site information. Volunteers will receive a tour ticket. Marshall’s kindness was easy to feel. You did not have to know him well to sense his sincerity, his steady way of listening, and his love for this community. His time on Council was limited, but his care for Norcross reached far beyond that role. He will be deeply missed in this community.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday, June 23, at 3 p.m. at H.M. Patterson & Son - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road NE in Brookhaven. A reception will immediately follow. For those looking for a practical way to support his family, Barbi Grayson shared a meal train for Patty.

The City of Norcross Summer Concert Series continues tonight, Friday, June 19, with ‘September in the Park’ at Thrasher Park from 7:30-9:30pm! Bring a picnic or grab dinner downtown, then settle in for a summer evening of funk, soul, tight horns, powerful vocals and plenty of groove!

Father’s Day Pop-Up
Celebrate Father’s Day weekend in Downtown Norcross on Saturday, June 20, from 12-5pm! Stop by the Betty Mauldin Parking Lot for inflatable T-ball, basketball and foam axe throwing. Plus a special appearance from Chopper, the Gwinnett Stripers mascot, from 1-2pm!! There will also be Father’s Day photo spots at 9 S. Peachtree and Betty Mauldin Park. Bring your own camera or phone, and make an afternoon of it with downtown shops and restaurants nearby!

The 6th Annual Gwinnett Pride Festival returns to Thrasher Park on Saturday, June 13, from 12-6pm! Hosted by Visibility Club, this year’s theme is “Unapologetically Us,” celebrating joy, connection, and the strength of Gwinnett’s LGBTQIA+ community. The free, family-friendly festival will feature live entertainment, queer-centered performers, a community market, music by La Choloteca, and space for advocacy and connection!

And, much to my delight, Elliott was a Young Norcross subscriber.

Over the years, Elliott sent me more than one unsolicited critique of this newsletter. A few made me roll my eyes, but when he sent an unexpected nod of approval, it made me feel like a million bucks.

Elliott wrote more than 10,000 columns in his life and was a regular at PDC on Wednesday mornings. Gwinnett is better because he lived here, paid attention and wrote it all down. He will be missed. A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 30 at 2pm at Christ Church Episcopal, 400 Holcomb Bridge Road, Norcross.

2026 Summer Concert Series
The City of Norcross Summer Concert Series returns to Thrasher Park from May through September, with concerts from 7:30-9:30pm! Face 2 Face will kick off the season tonight, Friday, May 22 (weather permitting), with the music of Billy Joel, Elton John and other classic pop-rock favorites. Grab dinner downtown or pack a picnic and enjoy a summer night in the park! Just don’t set up your chairs before 6:30am.

Memorial Day Remembrance
The City of Norcross will host its Memorial Day Remembrance event this Monday, May 25 at Thrasher Park from 11:30am-12:30pm. The program will include guest speaker Shelly-Ann Simpson Cunningham, Executive Director of Field Operations and Appeals for the Georgia Department of Veterans Service, along with performances by Coley Gilchrist. In case of rain, the event will move to the Cultural Arts Center.

Volunteer with Project Kids Eat
Project Kids Eat delivers hot meals and hope to local children and families living in extended-stay hotels and low-income apartments, including one location in downtown Norcross. The effort is led locally by Norcross resident Julie Williams through Campus Church. Volunteers are needed from 12-1pm, May 27 through July 24. Gwinnett Pride Festival Volunteer Call

Music runs tomorrow, Saturday, May 2 from 12-6pm, rain or shine! As of Thursday night, the forecast is looking more like overcast-or-shine by midday, which sounds like good porch weather to me. Streets in the festival zone close at noon, including N Peachtree St, S Peachtree St, Thrasher St, Park Dr, and nearby side streets around Thrasher Park. Plan to walk in or Uber if needed! If you need anything during the day, our home base will be the Norcross Womans Club Historic Library at 65 N Peachtree St.

Come hungry and thirsty, too! In addition to our downtown restaurants, we’ll have Urban Wings, Cue BBQ, Low-Co Motion, Good Vibes Wellness, Top Job Beverages, Social Fox Brewing, and King of Pops! You’ll also see BIA Charter School, Carolee’s, and Norcross Porchfest merch! If you live inside or just outside the downtown area, please enter the Porch Decorating Contest (inspo board)! We’d love to see the neighborhood dressed up as people walk through! Submit your decorated porch here!

A quick note for porch hosts and neighbors in the festival zone: your home can be part of the day in whatever way feels right to you. If you want to put out a lemonade stand, bake sale, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, or something small and fun on your own property, please do. If you’re worried about people stepping on your grass or cutting through your yard, a few cones or stakes with yarn can be a simple, friendly way to mark the space and gently let attendees know not to pass through.

I’ve been to several porchfests around Georgia, and I’ve always seen people on their best behavior. There is usually a real sense of respect for porch hosts and surrounding homes. Attendees, please help us keep it that way. Stay on sidewalks and public areas when walking around, be thoughtful around yards and porches, clean up after yourself, and be neighborly!

Where There’s a Will at Lionheart Theatre
Where There’s a Will by Joe Simonelli opens at Lionheart Theatre on Friday, May 1 and runs through May 17. In this comedy, William Shakespeare is accidentally transported to the modern world, where he lands outside the home of Gordon Coleridge, a struggling playwright with writer’s block, a pushy manager, and an estranged girlfriend. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2pm, with an added Saturday matinee on May 16 at 2pm! Tickets are $18/$20.

MOMS Club® Open House

Norcross Garden Sale
The Norcross Garden Club’s Spring Plant Sale is back! Shop passalong plants, perennials, natives, veggie starts, trees, shrubs, ferns, ground covers and houseplants, plus a few extra garden finds, all at great prices! The Front Porch Decorating Contest, hosted in partnership with BIA Charter School, is also coming up! Participating homes should be decorated, photographed, and submitted by April 30 at 5pm, and remain decorated through the end of the festival. Voting will take place online, with the winner announced Saturday after Porchfest. If you’re feeling creative, sidewalk and driveway chalk art is also encouraged. The 6th Annual Gwinnett Pride Festival returns to Thrasher Park on June 13 from 12-6pm, and organizers are currently seeking volunteers to help bring the day together! Hosted by Visibility Club, this free, family-friendly event celebrates Gwinnett’s LGBTQIA+ community with live entertainment, local vendors, and a strong sense of connection. Individuals and groups interested in volunteering can sign up here!

Annual Spring Recycle & Clean Up Day
The City’s annual Spring Recycle & Clean Up Day is tomorrow, Saturday, April 11 from 8am-12pm at Norcross Public Works, 345 Lively Ave. Residents within city limits can drop off paper for shredding, electronics, scrap metal, and paint (up to 5 containers per household) for recycling, along with bulky items for disposal.

Volunteer Meeting for Norcross Porchfest
If you’re planning to volunteer for Norcross Porchfest, we’ll be at 45 South tomorrow, Saturday, April 11 from 2:30-3:30pm to walk through roles, timing, and what to expect! It’s completely optional, so if you can’t make it, no worries. Just make sure you’re signed up on our site or following along on Instagram and we’ll send out notes and a task sign up sheet so you can choose what works best for you! Porch hosts, your separate meetup is still on from 1-2pm at 45 South. See you there!

Earth Day Celebration with Poder LatinX
Join Poder LatinX on Friday, April 24 from 4-8pm at Thrasher Park an Earth Month celebration centered on culture, education, and community. In partnership with GALEO, Sierra Club, and Georgia Conservation Voters Education Fund, the event will feature food trucks, local artisans, and live music, all highlighting sustainability and environmental justice.

Norcross Garden Sale
The Norcross Garden Club’s Spring Plant Sale is back! Shop passalong plants, perennials, natives, veggie starts, trees, shrubs, ferns, ground covers and houseplants, plus a few extra garden finds, all at great prices! It takes place at 33 College Street and next door at Heritage Park. The sale runs Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24 from 10am-7pm, and Saturday, April 25 from 10am-2pm. Proceeds support horticulture scholarships through the Garden Club of Georgia, along with local youth gardening efforts! Rain or shine, with cash, check, card and PayPal accepted!

Easter Egg Hunt & Festivities
Saturday, April 4 is a full day of Easter fun in Norcross! Start at Rossie Brundage Park with the free Easter Egg Hunt at 10am, then stick around for photos with the Bunny and a Disney Princess. An Egg-stra Special Egg Hunt for kids with special needs follows at 1pm, with adaptive tools available to help make the experience fun and accessible for everyone! Then head to downtown Norcross for the Shop Hop Eggstravaganza from 2-5pm, with retail and dining specials, activities, face painting and more spring fun around town! Registration is only required for the special needs hunt.

Hispanic Business Outreach Event
The City of Norcross Economic Development Department is hosting a Hispanic Business Outreach Event on Wednesday, April 23 from 10:30am-12:30pm at the Norcross Cultural Arts & Community Center. You’ll have the chance to connect with groups like the Hispanic Business Center, UGA’s Small Business Development Center, Prospera and more, all there to share real guidance, resources and next steps. Registration is required and space is limited!

Blessing of the Animals
Norcross Presbyterian Church, 89 Jones Street, will hold its annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, April 26 with an outdoor service by the bell, followed by individual blessings for pets. It’s usually a very dog-friendly crowd, though past years have also included a lizard and even a snake, which definitely kept things interesting. Everyone is welcome if you’d like to bring a pet and be part of a worship service that’s a little more ‘ruff’ around the edges!

Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run
Norcross Police is hosting its first Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run on Saturday, March 28, and the community is invited to join! The morning includes a 5K run at 9am and a 1.4 mile walk at 10am. There will be a checkpoint at One Heart Church, followed by food, drinks, and community booths at the finish. The Lionheart Theatre Company kicks off its 26th season with the hilarious Southern comedy Dearly Beloved by Jones Hope Wooten.
